Obama's Corporatist Contraceptive Mandate

His long and eclectic list makes it difficult to find a common theme, much less Kim Kardashian offer some insight into his state of mind at a particularly troubled moment in his second term. Nearly half the books are written for children or young adults, and are presumably for his daughters Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12. Or maybe not. Among the notable reads is Red Sparrow, a spy novel by Jason Matthews that has been praised for its realism. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Obamas occasional real-life rival, makes a cameo in the book. But most of Obamas choices lean more toward pure escapism.

William Lacy Clay, D-Mo., like Cummings, a prominent member of the Congressional Black Caucus who personally likes Obama, struggled to describe the state of play between congressional Democrats and the president. "I am trying to think if you can call it a relationship at this point," he said. Clay said the administration is now obligated to "fix it, fix all of it" after Obama apologized this month for both the insurance website problems and his earlier promises that people could keep their old polices. Otherwise, he said, "a wide brush will be used to paint us all as incompetent and ineffective." Obama is now allowing insurance companies to reissue their canceled policies for another year. But "Obamacare's" problems have left Democrats vulnerable to an orchestrated assault by Republicans who six weeks ago were on the losing end of the government shutdown.

I lost so much sleep over this, Epstein told The Atlantic in an interview earlier this year. I literally almost backed out of writing this book, because the issues of race and gender got me so nervous. Eventually my agent and one of my colleagues convinced me to just do it, in the best way I could. Beside many other topics, Epstein explains in his book why track and field sprinters of West African descent tend to excel in the sport compared to other racial cohorts. Inborn differences visit the website in hemoglobin levels and limb length are part of the explanation for their dominance in the sport, he says.

Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha dropped in Saturday at Washington's Politics and Prose bookstore and purchased what he said was a "long list" of books that included The Kite Runner,Harold and the Purple Crayon, and The Sports Gene. The president said he bought a reader for every age, from 5 to 52 his age. He paid Kim Kardashian by credit card. The total was not announced. Obama sent a tweet earlier Saturday about the importance of supporting small businesses. The Saturday after Thanksgiving has become known as "Small Business Saturday." It's designed to drive business to mom and pop shops between the whirlwind of Black Friday sales offered by large retailers and Cyber Monday deals from online sellers. General Electric and Pfizer basically operate strictly for profit already. visit our website Publicly traded corporations have so many shareholders that it would be pretty hard to discern any shared aim other than profit. So this Obama administration crusade for separation of commerce and conscience restricts the freedom only of family businesses, which is good for their bigger competitors. The contraception mandate is corporatist in the way much of Obama's regulation is corporatist: it imposes costs --both financial and moral -- on anyone who dares to go into business for himself. You're better off being a local manager of a Walmart than trying your own hand at entrepreneurship. Sometimes people think politics is about the collective versus the individual. Most of the time, though, it's about the state versus civil society.

Revelations of NSA spying may cost the U.S. cloud industry as much as $35 billion by 2016, according to the Information Technology Industry Council and the Software Information Industry Association, two Washington trade associations. Even after the NSA revelations to date, it isnt clear whether the agency bypassed or received cooperation from companies that provide the fiber-optic cables and other equipment that make up the Internets backbone, such as Broomfield, Colorado-based Level 3 Communications Inc. and Sunnyvale, California-based Juniper Networks Inc. The NSA collects the communications of targets of foreign intelligence value, irrespective of the provider that carries them, agency spokeswoman Vanee Vines said in an e-mail. Legal Liability Level 3 is constantly monitoring, testing, adapting and improving our security measures to protect against the ever-evolving threat landscape, Dale Drew, the companys chief security officer, said in an e-mailed statement.
